  • Adverse impacts of extreme weather events such as typhoons, storms and heavy rain have caused enormous suffering including loss of life, the disruption of livelihoods and economic activities, and the degradation of the environment in the APEC region. They also negatively affected progress towards development in a number of key areas including agriculture and food security, public health, disaster risk management and water resources management. The APEC Research Center for Typhoon and Society (ACTS) held its annual ACTS workshop at the GIS NTU Convention Center in Taipei City from October 17 to October 18. The workshop has gathered around 70 representatives and participants from 7 member economies to discuss risk management innovations for weather-related natural disasters. This year the Workshop has featured a Breakout Session. Participants were divided into different groups to further discussed topics assigned to them.

After one and a half day’s meeting schedule, the ACTS held a field study visiting the Kueichekeng Water and Soil Conservation Education Park and the first green library in Taiwan – Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch. The delegates not only have learned the history and geological background of Kueichekeng, but also the methods of conserving the mine. They were also impressed about the construction of the green library.
