  • Severe weather events (e.g. typhoons, storms and heavy rain) pose enormous threats to societies in the APEC region. Therefore, the advanced technology of typhoon forecasting and hydrological applications have been the major concern of APEC members. Furthermore, the social implications of the technology development also have huge impacts on national, regional and global scales.
Since the establishment of the APEC Research Center for Typhoon and Society (ACTS) on 22 November, 2010 in Taipei, the Center has been organizing training workshops and symposiums to enhance the Member Economies on capacity of managing typhoon and heavy rain events.
The aims of the 2017 APEC Typhoon Symposium – The Challenges and Opportunities for Typhoon and Flood Forecasting would be subject to following:

    1.    To demonstrate recent advancements in severe weather research, monitoring, and forecast in Chinese Taipei and other member economies
    2.    To facilitate exchange of information among APEC member economies in hazardous weather events and risk management
    3.    To exchange knowledge and experience in the fields of flood forecasting and hazard management
    4.  To share experience on climate change among APEC Member Economies
    5.  To share the methodologies and applications on weather-related risk management
Beside inviting international and domestic scholars and government officials to share their valuable research result and experience, the 2017 APTS also comes along with a Student Poster Competition.
For the poster competition, the targeted participants are: undergraduate and graduate students in the fields related to atmospheric sciences, hydraulic engineering, and social sciences. Awards and prizes will be given to the participants. Please notice that, participants of student poster competition are limited to the first authors from graduate schools. Participants are required to introduce the research findings as well as answering questions by their posters.
